Sleep System

Your sleep system can make or break a trip. A good bag or quilt paired with the right pad means you actually rest — and rested hikers cover more ground, make better decisions, and enjoy every mile more. We have verified weights on sleeping bags, quilts, and pads so you can dial in warmth-to-weight without guessing.

Scouring the trail...

01

Weight

Your sleep system is usually the second heaviest category after shelter. Quilts save weight by eliminating the back insulation you compress anyway. Down saves weight over synthetic at the same warmth rating.

02

Temperature Rating

Ratings are tested to comfort limits, not survival. A 20F bag keeps most people comfortable to about 25-30F in reality. If you sleep cold, size up. If you run hot, a quilt gives you venting options.

03

Down vs Synthetic

Down is lighter, more compressible, and lasts longer — but loses insulation when wet. Treated down helps. Synthetic keeps insulating when damp and costs less, but weighs more. Match the fill to your conditions.

04

Sleeping Pad R-Value

R-value measures insulation from the cold ground. Summer trips need R2+. Three-season needs R3-4. Winter demands R5+. Your pad matters as much as your bag for staying warm.

05

Quilt vs Bag

Quilts save 20-30% weight by removing the hood and zipped back. They work great for side sleepers and warm sleepers. Mummy bags are warmer for the weight if you sleep on your back and want a hood.

If you want maximum weight savings and sleep on your side, a quilt is hard to beat. If you sleep cold, toss and turn, or want a hood, a mummy bag provides more consistent warmth. Many hikers own both.

800+ fill power gives the best warmth-to-weight ratio. 850-950 fill is premium and noticeably lighter and more compressible. 650-700 fill is budget-friendly but heavier. For backpacking, 800+ is the sweet spot.

Very. You lose more heat to the ground than to the air. A high-loft bag on a thin pad will leave you cold. Match your pad R-value to conditions: R2-3 for summer, R3-4 for three-season, R5+ for winter.

Enlightened Equipment, Katabatic Gear, Nunatak, UGQ (Underground Quilts), and Timmermade are all highly regarded. Many offer custom sizing, fill power options, and temperature ratings to match your exact needs.
