01
Weight
Your sleep system is usually the second heaviest category after shelter. Quilts save weight by eliminating the back insulation you compress anyway. Down saves weight over synthetic at the same warmth rating.
02
Temperature Rating
Ratings are tested to comfort limits, not survival. A 20F bag keeps most people comfortable to about 25-30F in reality. If you sleep cold, size up. If you run hot, a quilt gives you venting options.
03
Down vs Synthetic
Down is lighter, more compressible, and lasts longer — but loses insulation when wet. Treated down helps. Synthetic keeps insulating when damp and costs less, but weighs more. Match the fill to your conditions.
04
Sleeping Pad R-Value
R-value measures insulation from the cold ground. Summer trips need R2+. Three-season needs R3-4. Winter demands R5+. Your pad matters as much as your bag for staying warm.
05
Quilt vs Bag
Quilts save 20-30% weight by removing the hood and zipped back. They work great for side sleepers and warm sleepers. Mummy bags are warmer for the weight if you sleep on your back and want a hood.
