Pack

Your pack is the foundation of every trip. Whether you are chasing ultralight dreams or loading up for a week in the backcountry, the right backpack distributes weight, fits your frame, and disappears on the trail. We have verified weights on every pack here so you know exactly what you are starting with before you even add gear.

Scouring the trail...

01

Weight

Pack weight is the one number you carry on every single trip. A lighter pack means more energy for miles, but going too light can sacrifice comfort and durability. Find the balance that matches your style.

02

Volume & Capacity

Weekend overnighters need 35-50 liters. Week-long trips push 55-70L. Thru-hikes depend on your system — ultralight setups can get away with less. Match the volume to how you actually pack, not how you wish you packed.

03

Frame & Suspension

Frameless packs save weight but shift the load to your body. Internal frames distribute weight to your hips. If you are carrying over 20 lbs base weight, a good frame system is worth every gram.

04

Features

Hip belt pockets, roll-top vs drawstring, side pockets for water bottles, gear loops — these details matter on the trail. Think about how you access your gear while moving.

05

Brand & Build Quality

Cottage brands like Gossamer Gear, ULA, and Granite Gear push boundaries that the big brands follow years later. Do not sleep on the small makers — they are often lighter, tougher, and more thoughtful.

Under 20 lbs is considered lightweight, under 10 lbs is ultralight. But the best base weight is the one that gets you outside comfortably. Do not sacrifice sleep or safety chasing a number.

Measure from the bony bump at the base of your neck (C7 vertebra) down to the top of your hip bones (iliac crest). Most packs come in sizes based on this measurement — getting it right is the single most important fit factor.

It depends on your base weight. If your total pack weight stays under 20 lbs, frameless can work beautifully and save you a pound or more. Over 20 lbs, a frame will save your hips and back.

Absolutely. Brands like Gossamer Gear, ULA, Pa'lante, and Granite Gear make some of the lightest, most durable packs available. Many thru-hikers swear by them. The wait times can be longer, but the quality and weight savings are real.
